Day 5 - . We drove to Ovillers to start the day from a point on the previous days route. From there we set out to cover the many cemeteries used by Casualty Clearing Stations to the rear of the Front Line. We joined the main road and followed it to Albert where we proceeded through the town and then out along the Ancre valley. We crossed the river at Heilly and then turned Eastwards along the South bank of the river. Looking South from the cemetery at Heilly we viewed the skyline where the Red Baron was finally brought down. At Ville Sur Ancre we turned South and made our way to Sailly Laurette where we crossed the Somme river. At Cerisy we crossed the Somme again, joined the North bank and followed the river to Etinhem before turning back towards Meaulte and Albert. By this time we had completed the South Western sector of the Somme and virtually all of our planned trip. |
