Day 4 - again found us starting South of the Albert Bapaume Road. Driving to Martinpuich Communal Cemetery we unloaded the bikes before making our first call of the day. We were now in the central part of the battlefield where the front line advanced the most, which is why the cemeteries are so spread out. From Martinpuich we headed South to London Military before turning West towards Contalmaison. From there we gradually made our way Northwards before rejoining the very busy main road (D929) for a stop at Poziers. We continued Northward, up and over the Southern edge of Thiepval ridge stopping at Lonsdale before circling back to the South towards Lochnagar crater. It was at this point that we suffered our first crisis when our support driver reversed the Land Rover into a Ford Focus. Fortunately for us the occupants were not only safe but were also Australian tourists who took it all in their stide. With half the day complete we stopped at Gordons Dump for lunch before continuing on a Southerly trend as far as Bray Sur Somme. Some of the main points of interest were finding the graves of Captain Wilfred Nevill (Famous for leading his men over the top with footballs) at Carnoy Military cemetery and Private James Miller VC, at Dartmoor also, seeing the famous inscription at the Devonshires cemetery before finishing the day at Point 110 near to where Sassoon reportedly won his MC. Whilst at Bray, we made a point of visiting the French National Cemetery at to place a cross on the grave of the lone British soldier buried there. |
