Why we did it! |
|||
|
The aim of our trip was to raise money for The Royal British Legion and The Ex Services Mental Welfare Society by cycling between 150 WW1 Cemeteries located in the Somme region. I am pleased to say that we achieved our aim between 26 and 31 May 2001. We cycled 215 miles in 18 hours 24 minutes in the saddle and visited 152 cemeteries. In addition, we laid personal messages on 14 individual headstones for family members who have never been able to visit in person before returning with photographs for them. One of our photographs arrived just in time for Fathers Day, for a son, who had never known his father. This one act alone, for the team, made it all worthwhile. Our final total reached £5000, £3750 of which was presented to the RBL on 29 October at the launch of the 2001 Poppy Appeal. We have photographs of every cemetery that we visited which are now available to anyone who may want them, just visit the Day by Day pages. |
